BASICS ABOUT BRUSHING
Most people hate to visit a dentist. This unwillingness to commit to a dental appointment means that brushing properly at home is even more important than ever
Here are some brushing basics which you should consider for better teeth:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Dont rush when you brush. Take enough time to do a thorough job.Dentists say that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 minutes twice a day
- Practice good technique. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline. Gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing surface in short stroke. Remember to brush the inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue. Avoid vigorous or harsh scrubbing, which can irritate your gums.
- Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, especially if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.
- Keep your equipment clean. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air dry until using it again. Don't routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria.
- Know when to replace your toothbrush. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
- Proper cleaning of inner surfaces. To clean the inside surfaces of your top and bottom front teeth and gums, hold the brush almost vertical. To clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth, use short sweeping strokes.Using a forward-sweeping motion, gently brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove the decay-causing bacteria that exist in these plaques.
