Does Dental Problems Causes Heart Problems?

Does Dental Problems Causes Heart Problems?

Scientists find that dental problems can cause some heart problems. One of the severe dental problem is periodontitis. Infection of tissue around the teeth is called periodontitis  Scientific studies have proved that the patients with periodontitis. The periodontal patients show evidence to reaction to bacteria associated with periodontitis. The extended bacterial exposure leads to cardiovascular disease.

Patient with disease have bacteria which favours atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis leads to clogging of arteries which decreases the internal lumen and hardening. Hardening of arteries happen by the deposition of fat and other substances in your blood begin to stick to the sides of arteries. These deposits are called plaques. If this plaque block, you could have a heart attack or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage.

The bacteria from the mouth can enter into systemic circulation through gums. These bacteria incorporate with the arterial plaque and directly contribute to blockage. The other possibility that leads to heart diseases is body’s own immunity particularly the inflammatory mechanism. The natural immune response to any infection is inflammation.

In the case of periodontitis the bacteria present in the mouth travel through the blood. This cause an inflammatory response by blood cells. Due to this reaction blood cells swells. It narrows the arteries increase the risk of formation of clot. This inflammatory response leads to heart diseases as well as arthritis and so many other health problems.

Actually at present there is no idea regarding the exact relationship between periodontitis and heart problems. The matter is like coconut and coconut tree, no idea about which was first.  Anyway high levels of bacteria increases the chance of arteriosclerosis. But we can’t say one will cause the other. So an overall conclusion is periodontal diseases is the early sign of heart problems.

It is very hard to diagnose early a heart problem because it precedes no symptoms. If there is periodontitis, the manifestations are bleeding and painful gums. You won’t feel hardening of arteries and rise in cholesterol. If there is risk of heart disease, you should aware about the following instructions:
  • Loss weight
  • Eat healthy foods.
  • Exercise most of the week.
  • Control any condition that increase risk, such as diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

Treatment:

The treatment for periodontitis requires a cleaning of roots of teeth. This process is called scoling and root planning. If it is in advanced state surgery will be the best option. Medication will lower the risk that bacteria from the mouth will wind up infecting the tissues of the heart, causing a dangerous condition called endocarditis. You should know that in clean mouth it is very hard for the bacteria that cause periodontal disease to get started.

Healthy teeth leads to healthy heart.
