The longer food and drink stays in your child’s mouth, the more chance there is for acid to develop and cause damage to tooth enamel. This means that nibbling foods and sipping drinks over longer periods of time is more likely to cause tooth decay.
Facts:-
v Foods
such as dairy foods (milk, cheese and yoghurt) have lots of calcium in them,
which helps develop strong healthy teeth.
v If
you can’t have dairy foods, look for foods which have calcium added (some soy
drinks have added calcium).
v Don't
have lots of snacks between meals, especially ones that contain sugars and
acids. These cause plaque to build up on teeth, which can cause tooth decay.
v Choose
water as your main drink. Tap water is best because it contains fluoride which
helps harden and repair the enamel surface of teeth. Rinsing out your mouth
with water after you have had something to eat helps stop plaque building up
too. Tank water and bottled water (spring water) don’t have fluoride in them,
so they don’t protect teeth as well as tap water.
v Where
possible, choose medicines and cough lollies that are sugar free.
v Sports
drinks can erode your child’s teeth, particularly if your child drinks them
regularly. It’s best for your child to drink sports drinks only sometimes, and
to drink plenty of water instead. When he does drink sports drinks, it’s a good
idea for him to rinse with water straight away and to brush his teeth with a
fluoride toothpaste about an hour after.
v Food
and drinks aren’t the only things that can erode tooth enamel. Vomiting or
gastric reflux can also have a nasty effect. If your child has a vomiting bug,
she can protect her teeth by rinsing straight away with water and brushing
teeth with a fluoride toothpaste an hour later.

Food like crunchy fresh vegetable and fruits are good for your teeth and health too. Also do visit a dentist for dental checkups and cleaning once in every 6 months to avoid dental problems.

Apart form food, there could be several other reasons for bad dental health. It totally depends on how we take care of it overall.
