What is Root Canal?
Root canal is a technique by
which a tooth that is badly decayed or infected is repaired and saved. During
this procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and inside of the tooth is
cleaned and sealed. If at all under any circumstances, it is not treated, the
infection can spread to the surrounding teeth and may cause abscesses.
"Root
canal" is the term used to describe the natural cavity within the centre
of the tooth. The nerve is usually present in this region.
What causes damage to a tooth’s nerve and pulp?
The main
reason is deep decay. The other reasons include – a crack in the tooth,
or trauma to the face.
Why does the tooth pulp need to be removed?
After the
nerve damage, there is continuous bacterial growth in that region which may
lead to abscess at a later stage. The other problems that can be caused are:
- 1. There could be bone loss around the tip of the root.
- 2. The swelling may spread to other areas of face, neck, or head.
- 3. Drainage problems extending outward from the root.
What are the indications stating a root canal is required?
In most cases symptoms are
not at all present, but some of the signs that are included are:
- · Tooth ache upon applying pressure.
- · Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.
- · The tooth has a darkish discoloration.
- · Recurring pimples on gums.
- · Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
Effects after a Root Canal…
There is high probability of
the tooth feeling more sensitive. This is because of natural tissue
inflammation. This sensitivity can be controlled by medications that include ibuprofen or naproxen. The
patients can return to their normal activities after a root canal.
**It’s wise to minimize
chewing on the tooth under repair.
Complications following a Root Canal…
There is always a slight
chance of development of new infections after root canal. The reasons of this
include:
- · Undetected crack in the root of a tooth.
- · Inadequate dental restoration.
- · Breakdown of inner sealing material over time.
In many of these cases
retreatment is successfully done. In other times endodontic surgery is recommended.
The most common endodontic surgical procedure is apicoectomy or root-end resection.
Is Root canal affordable?
The cost depends on the severity of the issue. A root
canal done by a general surgeon would range from $350 to $540 for an incisor and $520 to $800 for a molar.
Are there other options to a Root Canal?
The other options include
tooth extraction and replacement with a bridge, implant or a removable partial
denture. But even after considering this the Root Canal is still recommended
because of its low cost and moreover the less treatment time it takes.
Root Canal prevention.
Following good oral hygiene practices (brushing twice a day,
flossing at least once a day, and scheduling regular dental visits) may reduce
the need for a root canal procedure.
